Portrait of Mary Brainerd

Mary Brainerd

President and CEO, HealthPartners

“Because my career is in health care, the connection between thriving communities and better health is really clear to me. That is why the impact of philanthropy is so important for building healthy communities. It makes me want to support those efforts, and I appreciate having that opportunity on the board.”

Mary is president and CEO of Bloomington-based HealthPartners, the nation’s largest consumer-governed nonprofit health care organization.

A leader in the health care industry since 1984, Mary’s volunteer service is informed by the challenges she witnesses in her daily work. She chooses to support organizations and causes that foster healthy people and economies. For example, Mary is one of the founding CEOs and current chair of the Itasca Project, a group of 40 government, civic and business leaders addressing the issues that affect long-term economic growth for the region.

Widely known for her civic and business leadership, she was inducted into the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame in 2011.

A native of Saint Paul, Mary has a bachelor’s in philosophy from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas. She and her husband, Dick, have two children, Andrew and Mary.
