TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. Founded in 1984 as a multidisciplinary conference, the prestigious TED organization has since democratized. It now offers free online videos and lectures in addition to its invite-only conferences. The TED mantra is “ideas worth spreading.” It makes sense, then, that the New York City-based nonprofit launched the TEDx program in 2009 to provide a format for independent organizers to produce TED-like experiences at the local level.
The Twin Cities has its own local program, TEDxTC, which is sponsored by Minnesota Community Foundation. TEDxTC features combinations of live appearances and TEDTalks video for Twin Cities audiences. The programming varies widely, covering a diversity of topics—from science demonstrations to musical performances. However, TEDxTC presentations are universally short and dynamic. These events exist for the sole purpose of stimulating thought and conversation.
With hopes of exposing local luminaries to TED audiences worldwide, TEDxTC has welcomed the likes of bestselling author Dan Buettner and activist Winona LaDuke. Other guests include University of Minnesota professors, regional businesspeople and local artists. Some TEDxTC events are broadly programmed; others feature presentations on a single theme. Past topics include the extraordinary capacity of our youth and the future of food.
Minnesota Community Foundation partnered with TEDxTC in 2010 to support TEDx events in the Twin Cities. The pairing is a great fit for two innovative community leaders looking for new ways to bring together audiences committed to having an impact in our community.
